intro
I'm going to make a list of some projects.
major projects
(horizon)
minor projects
"Minor" is some combination of "not as important" and "doesn't take as long". Some of these are important but quick and others are unimportant but lengthly.
supplementary projects
Note: if i'm dead or something, the items in the list without links usually have a folder somewhere on my hard drive, usually in the folder 'projects' in my home directory.
rules for the above lists
Each entry is/for each entry:
- only one specific project (but prerequisite and followup projects may be implied)
- i've already spend significant time on this, if only in learning and planning
- it is clear what the result will be
- a work or hobby project, not a "life project"
- does not require so much money that i am not sure if i will ever work on it
This list is not/does not include:
- a to-do list, or a list of daily or weekly priorities
- theoretical or exploratory projects, even if high-priority, because for this type of project it is cannot be clear what the result will be until the main part of the project is complete (unless they are done except for writing-up, or unless the desired result is very clear, e.g. with the P vs. NP problem).
- things to learn about, even if high-priority
- project ideas, even if high-priority
- past projects, or projects which demand only ongoing maintanence
- recurring projects or tasks
This list not a list of high-priority things, things i want to remind myself of, things i haven't worked on but hope to do someday, or of how i actually spend my time right now, things that are urgent, things that are important, things that are almost done and just need to be gotten out the door, things that are the most promising, things that i definitely want to finish someday, but it is some combination of these lists.
I am grouping items together using my 'prime priority' method, which just means that i have a top priority, then a group of 2 priorites, then a group of 4 priorities, then a group of 6, then 10, then 14, etc (the numbers in each group are given by https://oeis.org/A075574 ). The ordering within each group is insignificant.
projects that require too much money or time
this is a separate list of projects, mostly charitable, that i may or not undertake someday if i ever have more time and money
- airplane sounds: a charity that records and collects the sounds that jet airplanes make when they are only a little more than 10,000 feet up
- children's books: a charity that gains the rights to everyone's favorite children's books and reprints them at cost upon demand
- open source chair: a charity that endows university chairs for the purpose, not of discovering new knowledge, but for producing and maintaining useful open software
- invisible college: some ideas i have for the structure/governance of universities, that would increase interdisciplinary studies and fairness
- angel investing: invest in startups that i think could change the world
- CCI: Collective Cognition Institute. A research institute for topics such as collaborative cognition, cognitive studies (neuroscience, cog psych, A.I., formal logic, etc), software for collaboration and for governance, a view of financial markets as a system for colloborative cognition.
