Location-aware yellow pages apps
i'm guessing that i should have one of these, but i haven't yet had a chance to try them out and see which is the best (sometimes i didnt bother to continue reviewing an app after i found it "doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants"):
- Aloqa
- +: nice interface
- +: quickly go to most useful categories (restaurants, gas)
- +: yelp reviews
- -: doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants
- -: doesnt let you use google maps/navigate to get directions to gas
- -: no way to access categories not in the interface
- : -: stays in your notification bar
- citysearch
- +: quickly go to most useful categories (restaurants, gas)
- +: lets you use google maps/navigate to get directions to gas
- +: reviews
- -: one extra click to get to nearby things
- -: doesnt really use your GPS loc (mb it uses the zipcode?!?)
- -: tauts you with first few senteces of editorials about places/events, but u cant read the rest
- Google maps w/ "popular categories" labs
- -: two clicks just to open popular categories list -- too bad there isn't an intent for this (that i know of) so that you could make a shortcut
- +: reviews
- +: "popular" subset of restaurant type categories
- -: you can access other categories by searching, but no way to browse them
- Places Directory
- +: reviews
- -: doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants
- -: doesnt let you use google maps/navigate to get directions
- Fast local search
- -: slow!
- -: doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants
- Free 411
- -: doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants
- FoodFinder?
- +: restaurant type categories
- HP Gloe
- Seems like a general framework for location-based lists of items with voting and reviews. has restaurants but also wikipedia pages, photos, polls. afaik not open source or extensible, tho.
- no restaurant type categories.
- -: DOES let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants, but only by going into settings and changing the radius
- Qype
- +: quickly go to most useful categories (restaurants, gas)
- -: doesn't let u see more than the initially displayed list of restaurants
- Where
- +: does other stuff too, like coupons (a few good ones for big businesses), local blog posts
- Yellowpages
- doesn't belong in this list b/c it is not GPS-enabled
- Yelp
- +: yelp reviews
- +: can filter by price or by "open now"
- +: has sales (coupons?!?) too (but not more than some preset list of nearby ones)
The ones I'm keeping for now are Google maps w/ popular categories labs, foodfinder (for its browsable complete category list), Where (for its other features), and Yelp (for its Yelp reviews, and filters).
